Question

Should we let children do what they want, or is it our responsibility as adults (not even necessary to be a parent) to guide our children?

Just wondering.

      1. No, they shouldn’t just be allowed to do it just because they want to do it. It is the role of the parent to parent and to set boundaries. Kids need boundaries and expectations and consequences to grow into healthy adults.

  1. I think it’s a fine balance. You just have to remember: you’re raising little adults, not perennial children. So raise them to make their own decisions, not just listen to yours. 😉 That’s my philosophy, hopefully I can implicate it with my own one day 😉

    1. I agree. But when a child e.g wants to eat candy everyday doesn’t mean I’ll let it. I can listen to his/hers thoughs around wanting candy, but I still will not provide him/her. And this way of thinking must be applicable in other areas to, right?

I just sometimes get the feeling that adults don’t dare to take the discussion.

      1. Yes. Interesting point. As the child grows, “because i said so,” becomes an increasingly insufficient answer. I know a parent cant have a 3-hour discussion about every request their kid makes, but again, parents should keep in mind that the child (or teen) will be increasingly making their own decisions, so its important to show why you are making them choose a certain thing… Those are just my thoughts 🙂
